Upcoming boy band, ‘Block B’, were trained to write 100 songs to develop their skills
Producer Cho PD praised the talents of Big Bang while revealing that he was training his own boy band, Block B, with the support of big name hip hop veterans. The producer revealed that wanted to ensure that his boys would debut with all the right skills.
In his interview with Newsen, Cho PD stated, “Any idol singer should have the competence of musicians like Big Bang.”
Cho PD followed up by explaining how he trained the members of Block B to work on writing and composing about 100 songs over the course of their training period. In training them to become singer-songwriters, Cho PD hoped to expand their experience and competence level, as well as promote ‘expert ease’.
Composer Assbrass, who was praised as being a ‘prodigy’ before Jo PD scouted him, is in charge of Block B’s title and follow-up tracks, while hip hop veteran Rhymer is the producing head for the entire album.
Cho PD stated, “SM Entertainment has Yoo Young Jin and YG Entertainment has Teddy. The two companies are known for their in-house producers, and the sounds they produce have become trademarks for the labels. Under the support of Assbrass and Masterkey, Block B learned how to become musicians themselves and developed their own essence and sound.”

Cho PD’s Block B is influenced by YG and SM Entertainment
Cho PD managed to turn many heads when he first revealed that he was producing his own hip hop idol group last year. Recently revealed to be a talented bunch named ‘Block B,’ Cho PD not only produced them musically, but right from scratch, starting from their casting, planning, and marketing.
When asked who he used as the model for his upcoming group, he revealed, “Yang Hyun Suk, who’s currently leading YG Entertainment, and Lee Soo Man of SM Entertainment are both seniors that have made an impact on me for life with the advices they’ve given.”
Years ago, just days before his debut, Yang had once told him, “Even if you’re 200%, 300% confident with your work, once you open the lid, you frequently aren’t satisfied with your work. That’s what music production is. In order to increase your chance for success, you have to put in endless effort.”
Regarding the piece of advice, Cho PD commented, “At the time, I didn’t think much of what he said, but every time I produce a new album now, I’ve developed a habit of chewing his words many times over. I think it’s words like this that become the greatest advice you could ever give to your junior.”
Years later, Cho PD stood at a crossroads in his career due to a long hiatus. After finding out that he was considering quitting, Lee Soo Man called him into his office for a three hour lecture delving into the secrets of SM’s success, international advancement, and the trial and error the company has undergone.
“It’s exceptional in any industry for a man of his stature to call in a junior that is simply at a crossroads in his life to give that much advice and help. The information he gave me as a pioneer of the Chinese and Japanese market was of great help,” he explained.

He previously emphasized what stands Block B apart from others when he first revealed their production. When asked to elaborate, he stated, “I’m not closed off to YG and SM’s personal styles. I naturally became their fan as I studied them. What we lack in comparison, such as our resources and creativity, we must make up for in talent. I stressed importance on finding our own strengths and emphasizing that to the best of our ability, in addition to embracing SM and YG’s strengths.”
Cho PD concluded, “Hallyu has become a light of hope in our music industry, which is currently in a recession. Hallyu has set up a platform for our industry to continue in the long run. Now is the time that we need to come together with our individual abilities, and it’s my two seniors that have become the models for that change with their love for their juniors.".

Cho PD to create new seven-member hip hop group, “Block B
Cho PD has recently revealed that he will be spending over $1.4 million USD to create and nurture a new seven-member hip hop group through his “Creating Korea’s Eminem Project.”
Cho PD stated on February 16th, “I won’t be creating artists who will copy Eminem, but artists who will give as much musical and social influence as Eminem. The industry has yet to see an artist who has correctly utilized the strongest point about rap, which is delivering messages to the listeners. I believe now is the time carry out a new venture in the already difficult Korean music industry.”
The new group will be named “Block B“, and its comprised of members who have been developing their craft with support from underground rappers; they’ve also received training for choreography. Interestingly enough, other hip hop artists have also been mentoring these trainees, including Verbal Jint, Skull, and Rhymer.
Cho PD expressed, “Introducing underground and public activities into their training is something that has never been done in a popular music industry where trained singers and indie groups have polarized. They will be a group that will satisfy both musically and popularity-wise.”
Block B are currently preparing for their debut this coming April, and they will also soon be revealing the profiles of the seven members.
